each day.

“70 year-old Buddhist monk Hua Chi has been praying in the same spot at his temple in Tongren, China for over 20 years. His footprints, which are up to 1.2 inches deep in some areas, are the result of performing his prayers up to 3000 times a day. Now that he is 70, he says that he has greatly reduced his quantity of prayers to 1,000 times each day.”

Milan 2009 - t.e. by christien meindertsma

christien meindertsma - flax
t.e. introduces "the flax project", a new collection designed by christien meindertsma. It consists of different objects, based on the contemporary handwriting of meindertsma in perfect harmony with the traditional Dutch 16th century cordage industry. By analysing the history of this craft, she has reduced the ropery to the original Dutch material: flax. Using the flax from a Dutch farmhouse, the filaments are spun in flax yarns, after which these are twisted into strands. The fresh and innovative approach of meindertsma to the very old techniques as spinning, weaving, twining and splitting has resulted in an astonishing collection of different objects. In conjunction with Zuiderzeemuseum Enkhuizen.

fabrica at Satellite

This&That is a collection of ten glass bells created especially for the Milan International Furniture Show 2009 by young artists at Fabrica, from an idea by American designer Tak Cheung. This&That combines everyday items, such as a bicycle handlebar, a chimney or cow ears, with the sophisticated beauty of blown glass. Different materials and production processes merge harmoniously to create a new, provocative synergy.

soft concrete
"The idea of the process defining the final shape of the object, is something that has always interested me. You cannot have total control, the materials are alive and do what they want.I just give them boundaries, against which they can react with freedom, always surprising me. They are my best partners and my source of inspiration. Experimentation is my way of translating a concept into an object. Here I created bags of different shapes. Once the bags are filled up with concrete they reveal their final shape and function, in this case a proposal for a bench for outdoor purposes. The concrete is first colored, then poured into the bags. Once these are ripped off, the furniture achieves a friendly, funny and soft look as well as a beautiful texture imprinted on it by the material of the bags. Another aspect that is very interesting about the project is the possibility of creating it on the spot, allowing it to be integrated better into the surroundings."

droog Milan 2009

Skin by Studio Nacho Carbonell
In the Skin furniture, a thin, closely adhering and elastic layer allows the user to place objects underneath it. This layer adapts and takes the form of the objects, creating spontaneous contours that lead your curiosity to discover what hides beneath them. Nacho wants us to become playful and child-like:
"You'll feel like playing hide and seek!" he says and follows on to explain why he chose for the unconventional leg heights, "it's all about changing the point of view, one's way of perceiving things".

MADE IN BERLIN 2009 - Milan

'valet' turns, because of an elaborated hinge, from a seemingly simple pole into a classic. If 'valet' does not serve, it stands mute and straight in the corner. Since the form is absolutely reduced to its minimum, 'valet' achieves the status of an object.

creation of a chair

22nd - 27th April, '09
Oratorio Della Passione Sant'ambrogio Milano
A chair is a chair is a chair.
Some come close to religion, others are ugly as sin. A narrative on an almost sacral theme, for the designer the creation of a chair is like that of a string quartet to the composer: a unique reading of it creator¡¯s cerebral signature, revealing his modus operandi against the zeitgeist.
To celebrate the existence of this daily-life four-legged comfort-bringer, about twenty-five designers were invited to the Oratorio della Passione at Sant Ambrogio Milan's oldest church - to express their personal confessions on chair prototyping.

stars

Stars Light
The stars design are hanging lights which diffuse a soft light. Used on their own, they produce luminous reference lights and can be used as side light or as night light. At different heights or in a group, they create a network of constellations which structures the space and gives it a new dimension.

Mr. light series

Mr. light series
powder coated steel,
Mr.1, Mr.2 and Mr.3 are the first three of a series of lights designed around the new LED T8 tube light bulbs. Aside from being radically more energy efficient and durable than standard fluorescent bulbs, these newly developed light tubes allow for more flexibility with the design by reducing the number of components needed to power them as well as by not needing a reflector shade. These lights explore the formal continuity between the bulb and the fixture while playing with the way the materials come together to produce a series of unexpected characters.
